Rising Damp Proofing Techniques
Damp Proof Course (DPC)

A damp proof course is a physical barrier typically installed during construction to prevent rising damp from travelling up through walls. It is usually made from durable, water-resistant materials such as bitumen felt, plastic, or slate, and is laid horizontally within the wall structure to block moisture at its source.

Chemical Damp Proofing
Chemical damp proofing involves injecting chemical solutions—commonly silicones or silanes—into the masonry. These chemicals penetrate the pores of the wall and form an impermeable barrier, effectively preventing moisture from rising through capillary action. It is often used in retrofit situations where physical DPCs are missing or have failed.
Electro-Osmotic Damp Proofing
Electro-osmotic damp proofing uses a low-voltage electrical current to redirect moisture within the wall. Electrodes are inserted into the masonry and connected to a power source, creating an electrical field that repels water molecules and encourages them to move away from internal surfaces. It is a less invasive option that can be suitable for heritage or listed buildings.
Surface Coatings
Surface coatings include waterproof paints, sealants, and cementitious coatings applied to internal or external wall surfaces. These coatings act as a barrier, sealing porous materials and preventing water ingress. While not a solution for rising damp, they are effective against penetrating damp and surface moisture.
Cavity Wall Insulation
In cavity wall construction, insulating material can be installed between the inner and outer walls. This not only improves thermal efficiency but also reduces the movement of moisture through the cavity, helping to prevent condensation and dampness within the property.
External Tanking
External tanking is a waterproofing method used primarily for basements or below-ground structures. A waterproof membrane or coating is applied to the external face of foundation walls to prevent groundwater from entering the building. It offers a robust solution for areas vulnerable to lateral water pressure.
Land Drainage Systems
Land drainage systems, such as French drains or perimeter drains, are designed to divert groundwater away from the foundations of a property. By managing water flow effectively, these systems help to keep lower levels of a building dry and reduce the risk of damp problems developing.
Ventilation Improvements
Improving ventilation is essential for controlling indoor humidity and preventing condensation, which can lead to damp. Installing extractor fans, passive vents, or mechanical ventilation systems encourages better air circulation and helps maintain healthy moisture levels inside the home.
What Our Clients Say
Anon
Tiles were letting by water in bathroom causing damp issues below. New shower cubicle and tiles installed. Was extremely happy with the work carried out. The office kept me up to date and the engineer was extremely knowledgeable and very pleasant to communicate with. Defo recommend.
Louise F
I'd spoken to various companies about the ongoing damp issues in my flat, but nobody was really able to get to the source of the problem until Redring sent over a damp specialist. Finally the issue has been fixed and my walls and ceilings look as good as new. Highly recommend.
Jack B
I met Stephen of Redring this week, by coincidence, a situation popped up where he could help the following day. He and Redring have been knowledgeable, quick to attend and swift in follow up - I couldn't have asked for more. Thank you Stephen and everyone at Redring for such great service.
